TCHULA, Mississippi –(AP) — Officials are investigating an accident Tuesday involving Amtrak’s City of New Orleans train and an 18-wheeler in Mississippi.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the train was headed to New Orleans with 152 passengers and 11 crew members when the accident occurred in Holmes County about 9:30 a.m.
Magliari said there were no reports of serious injuries, but a passenger and crew member were taken to local hospitals. He said it wasn’t immediately clear if they would be admitted, or treated and released.
Magliari said he had no information on the condition of the driver in the tractor-trailer. The Holmes County sheriff’s department, which is investigating the accident, didn’t immediately respond to a message Tuesday.
Amtrak chartered buses for the passengers because the train’s locomotive was damaged and must be repaired or moved before the train continues to its destination, Magliari said. He said northbound Amtrak rail traffic won’t be affected.
Magliari said the accident happened at a marked public crossing.
A photograph taken by the Mississippi Highway Patrol shows a heavily damaged trailer near the tracks with corn spilling out. The cab of the 18-wheeler did not appear to have been struck by the train.
