More than 100 youth learn to swim at Boys & Girls Club

Special to The Mississippi Link

Kay Crotwell, director of swimming instructors at Courthouse Racquet & Fitness, has organized a team of six volunteer instructors to provide swimming lessons free of charge to the members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Mississippi – Capitol Unit. Crotwell and her team volunteer three hours everyday Monday through Thursday. So far, 112 children ranging from age 6-15 have been through the program and more than 100 have learned to swim.

Crotwell said the lessons can mean the difference between life and death.

“The number one reason kids need to learn how to swim is safety. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury related death for children ages 1-14,” Crotwell said.

She cites how tragic events have made her want to help.

“The recent deaths of children in the Jackson area made me decide to get involved in the Boys and Girls Club and teach swimming to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn,” Crotwell said.

Larry King, Vice President of Operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Mississippi, believes this effort by Crotwell and the Courthouse will result in saving lives.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that Kay (Crotwell) and her team have taught these children a valuable, life-saving skill. The kids absolutely love learning to swim, once they overcome that initial fear. This project is something that has changed the lives of many youth. We’re so thankful to the Courthouse and Kay,” King added.
