CASS LAKE, Minn. – A Mississippi man was critically injured and his family killed when he lost control of his vehicle on an icy highway in northern Minnesota.

The accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. Minnesota authorities said 28-year-old Jeremiah Statham of Foxworth was traveling eastbound on Highway 2, about nine miles east of Cass Lake, when his vehicle slid on the icy highway, left the road, hit some trees and a stump and rolled over.

Troopers said the truck came to final rest upside down on its roof.

Statham’s wife, 27-year-old Catherine Statham; 3-year-old son, Jeremiah; and 1-year-old daughter, Emma, died from their injuries, the Associated Press reported.

Statham was transported to a hospital in Duluth in critical condition. Hospital authorities said later he was improving.

Minnesota authorities said everyone was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was not considered a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.
