Domestic dispute turns deadly

A Calhoun City man is dead after authorities said he was shot and killed by his girlfriend’s cousin. Malcolm Bellum, 22, died at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after he was allegedly shot by 33-year old Melvin Bailey.

Authorities said the shooting occurred about 10 p.m., Feb. 18 at the Oakwood Apartment complex. Reportedly, Bellum and his girlfriend got into an argument when the woman called Bailey, her cousin.

Police said when Bailey arrived at the couple’s apartment, he and Bellum argued and Bailey allegedly shot him during the altercation.

Bailey has been charged with manslaughter.

Drivers blame cat for accident

Drivers in Attala County blamed a cat for an accident that involved two separate vehicles. Authorities said the incident occurred around 9 a.m., on Feb. 19, on Williamson Road near U.S. Highway 35 south.

The driver of a pick up truck said he slammed on his brakes when a cat ran in front of his vehicle. After the sudden stop, a van traveling behind him rammed him from behind.

There were no major injuries.

Man dies when power chair catches fire

Montgomery County Arson Investigator Joel Hill said he is still investigating a fire that killed an 84-year old man after his power chair caught fire. Hill said Henry Townsend died after his power chair ignited setting his house on fire. Hill said the fire occurred in January at 507 Academy Street. Townsend’s grandson, who also lived in the home, discovered the fire in his grandfather’s bedroom shortly after 6 a.m.

Firefighters arrived on the scene but were unable to rescue Townsend.

Clarksdale fire chief retiring

Fire chief Mike Robinson told city officials after 33 years with the department he’s decided to retire. Robinson joined the department in 1978 and has been chief since 2006. His last official day will be May 1.

Before he became the fire chief, Robinson served as the department’s training officer and arson investigator.

Man stabbed in the back in Clarksdale

Clarksdale police are investigating an aggravated assault where a man was stabbed in the back. Captain Robbie Linley said at 12:04 a.m. on Jan. 7, a black male was stabbed once in the back and once in the arm by an unknown assailant. The assault occurred in the 1500 block of North State Street.

The victim was listed in stable condition and police are still searching for a suspect.
