Kidnapper turns himself in; child safe

JACKSON – A man accused of kidnapping his 2-year old son has turned himself in to authorities. An Amber Alert was issued for Xavier Deshun Martin on Thursday, April 29, after police said his father, 30-year old Cedric Deshun Martin, of Lamar County, took off with the toddler on April 23.

Martin turned himself in to United States Marshals at the James Eastland Federal Courthouse in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, last Thursday afternoon.

The Amber Alert was issued just after 10 a.m. that morning for Martin, who was driving a 2002 white, four door Ford Focus with a Scott County, Mississippi license plate.

Martin was last seen with the boy on Friday, April 23, after he dropped the child’s mother at an undisclosed location. Authorities believed Martin was in the Madison area after his cell phone signal was traced in that vicinity.

Authorities also said Martin may have been armed and was considered “extremely dangerous.”

Federal, state and local agencies as well as Lamar Advertising and Entergy Mississippi helped in the search by passing information out to the public.

“This is why this system is in place,” said Lt. Colonel Stanley Sisk, Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. “We were able to blanket the state with a description of the suspect, the child and the vehicle they were riding in, and obviously, the most important part is the child is safe and can be returned to his family.”

Once Martin was in custody, Xavier was transported to a local hospital by the Mississippi Department of Human Services for a thorough medical examination.

Martin was questioned by U.S. Marshals and he was later transported to the Lamar County Jail by MBI Investigators, where he was charged with kidnapping.

Several other charges are pending.
