Former Hinds Co. DA turns in law license

Associated Press – January 6, 2009 3:04 PM ET

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Former Hinds County District Attorney Ed Peters has given up his law license over an undisclosed complaint.

Peters has been linked by witnesses to the judicial bribery scandal that toppled attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs. Peters has not been charged in the case and has not responded to numerous messages.

Mississippi Bar Association attorney Adam Kilgore says Peters is “admitting guilt to a bar complaint” with the irrevocable resignation of his license.

Kilgore could not release information about the complaint due to confidentiality rules.

Witnesses in the Scruggs investigation say Peters was paid $1 million to influence a Hinds County judge in a dispute over legal fees. The investigation continues.
