Former deputy going to jail for robbing Hispanic drivers

News Briefs From Across The State

Took their money during traffic stops

A former Lee County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to a year in jail after he admitted that he stole money out of the wallets of Hispanic drivers. Shane Minich was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Aberdeen, on four separate counts.

Authorities said Minich had hoped to serve about 10 months behind bars, but Federal Judge Sharion Aycock did not budge on the 12-month sentence. Minich received the additional time because during the traffic stops, he was carrying his service revolver.

Minich’s attorney appealed to the judge for less time since Minich never threatened his victims or used his firearm.

Judge Aycock said the intimidation factor was still there.

Minich must also repay the more than $2,800 he stole from his Hispanic victims.

WTVA reported that during a statement to Judge Aycock, Minich apologized for his actions and asked for forgiveness.

He reports to jail on Aug. 23.

Lexington doctor staying in jail

The Associated Press reported that a Holmes County doctor is staying in jail after a federal appeals court refused to reverse his sentence. Dr. Calvin Ramsey was convicted of filing false tax returns in 2000 and 2001, and was sentenced to 27-months in jail.

Ramsey was convicted in 2008 in U.S. District Court in Jackson.

Escaped inmate back in MDOC custody

A Mississippi Department of Corrections inmate is on his way back from Illinois, after escaping from custody while on work detail on June 24. Charles Ray Warren, 22, was captured in Lombard, Illinois about two weeks after he escaped.

During the investigation of Warren’s escape, MDOC Investigators and the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, in Oxford, learned that Warren might be hiding in Illinois. Working with the U.S. Marshals in Illinois, Mississippi officials said Warren was successfully apprehended.

Warren was serving a 5-year sentence after being convicted of vehicle theft and malicious mischief in Hinds County.

Warren was arrested in Illinois without incident and was held at the Cook County jail.

Warren now faces felony escape charges once he is returned to Mississippi.
