As many as 10 cows reported loose

Three cows were killed in separate accidents after the cattle got loose on two areas of Interstate 10 near Gulfport.

Harrison County Sheriff’s Sgt. Charles Overstreet tells The Sun Herald each of the cows was struck by vehicles. No persons were injured but the vehicles sustained heavy damage.

The accidents were reported within a period of 15 minutes Monday night. Authorities believe at least five to seven cows got loose, but it could have been as many as eight to 10.

Authorities said animal-control officers were meeting with property owners to determine who owns the cows.

Man killed in Columbus accident

A 56 year-old man is dead after after his motorcycle collided with a car on a busy highway in Columbus. Officers said it happened about 6:30 Wednesday evening at the intersection of Crescent Drive and Highway 45 North, in front of Carl Hogan Toyota.

Witnesses told police the driver of a Mercedes passenger car pulled out in front Edward Dvorak, who was wearing a helmet.

Dvorak was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured.

Traffic was backed up more than a hour after the accident. The crash remains under investigation.

32 arrested for betting on football games

The Forrest County sheriff’s deputies have arrested 32 people for illegal gambling. Deputies say the suspects were placing bets on college and professional football games.

Sheriff Billy McGee tells The Hattiesburg American the arrests occurred at a home in Hattiesburg on Sunday at around 10 a.m.

McGee said sheriff’s officials began watching the house after receiving reports from the community about activity at the residence.

He says more than $5,000 was seized from the house

Jones County investigating church burglaries

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in the recent burglaries of two churches. Sgt. John Smith of the Investigative Division said the break-ins occurred at First Baptist Church of Myrick and Freedom Baptist Church on Freedom Road after 10 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 8 a.m. on Oct. 21.

He says an undisclosed amount of money was taken from the churches, which are located within a quarter-mile of one another. The burglaries were discovered the next morning by church employees.

Smith says the burglaries remain under investigation, and there have been no arrests.

Student robbed at college dorm

Authorities say a student has been robbed in a dormitory on the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.

The dean of students, Ricky G. Ford, says surveillance cameras show a hooded man entering and exiting White Hall without a key. Ford says it is normal procedure for doors to be locked at 10 p.m. each night. The incident occurred just after midnight Monday.

Ford says a student had just sold his car and had a large amount of cash on him. Ford says the student was displaying this when later an unidentified male entered the dorm room where a small number of students were present.

Ford says the man displayed the gun and demanded the cash.

He says Booneville police and campus authorities are investigating.
