Jackson Public Schools held the groundbreaking ceremony for a brand new baseball/softball diamond at Callaway High School on Monday. Garrett Construction, owned by Jackson businessman Socrates Garrett, graciously sponsored the upgrades to the baseball/softball diamond which included extending the diamond, cutting the diamond, preparing the field for sod installation, installing sod on the field, laying the base pads, and elevating the pitcher’s mound.

“The Callaway family and community are very excited about the work being done on the field. We are thankful to Socrates Garrett and Garrett Construction for sponsoring the project,” said Callaway Principal Clinton Johnson.

The partnership was said to be an example of the kinds of collaborations that JPS Superintendent Lonnie J. Edwards Sr. is advocating between Jackson Public Schools and the business community.

“We can’t say thank you enough for the hard work and generosity of Mr. Garrett for donating the time and resources for this project. We look forward to other Jackson businesses getting involved in assisting us develop baseball fields throughout JPS,” Edwards said.
