GREENVILLE – Congressman Bennie Thompson’s (D-MS) annual college and career fair will be held this Friday, Oct. 7, at the Washington County Convention Center in Greenville. The fair will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. The fair is free and open to the public.

For the last five years, Thompson has sponsored the fair that is geared toward helping high school students choose a suitable college or university, while helping college students move into the business arena. Anyone looking for college or employment opportunities, however, is also welcomed to attend, organizers said.

The fair will have vendors representing colleges, universities, academies and businesses on hand for everyone.

“I am inviting all businesses with current job openings to participate,” said Thompson. “I am also inviting all forms of institutions of higher learning to participate. To help serve our veterans, I will have on hand my Veterans’ Service Advocate from my Jackson Office to answer questions and provide guidance to veterans in regards to jobs, educational benefits, and more.”

According to Timla Washington, Community, Economic, and Workforce Developer, several well-known vendors will be participating in the event.

“This year we have USDA farm services, rural development and forest services,” she said. “We also have Uncle Ben’s, Homeland Security, Walmart, Peco Foods, the Secret Service, Entergy, ATMOS and many others.”

Military personnel will also be hand to assist participants.

Washington said vendors can set up for free at the fair and several workshops, including resume writing, will also be available that will focus on skill development and training.

“Every year we’ve had success in terms of public participation as well as businesses and institutions of higher learning that are eager to participate and share with the constituents what they have to offer,” she said.
