Three people thrown from vehicle
The Mississippi Highway Patrol says three State Line residents died, a fourth had minor injuries and a Leakesville woman was injured when her Honda Accord rear-ended their Ford sport utility vehicle on Mississippi 63 near Lucedale.
Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos tells The Mississippi Press that the Ford’s driver lost control and it rolled over several times Saturday afternoon, ejecting him and two passengers. The SUV’s fourth occupant – the only one wearing a seat belt – was treated and released.
Poulos says Andre Rogers, age unavailable, died at the scene.
Forty-one-year-old Jermain Rogers and the SUV’s driver, 48-year-old Simon Patterson, died at George County hospital, where 16-year-old Deandre Rogers was treated and 27-year-old Ravielle Bolton of Leakesville was admitted in stable condition.
Poulos says the accident is being investigated.
Kemper plant worker dies
The death of a contract worker at Mississippi Posers’ Ignite coal power plant in Kemper County is being investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
On Friday, June 15, Kemper County Coroner Terry Bostick identified the man as 46-year-old Emery “Hoyt” Ferguson, of Willard, Mo. Ferguson was killed Thursday afternoon when the pipes in the back of the truck smashed into the vehicle’s cab.
According to the Clarion-Ledger, Ferguson was employed since April 2011 by M.G. Dyess Inc., a Jefferson Davis County company that’s installing a natural gas pipeline to serve the under-construction power plant.
Rick Dyess, the company’s vice president, wouldn’t discuss the accident, citing OSHA’s probe.
He said the company’s work for Mississippi Power has been suspended pending the investigation, which OSHA says could take several months to complete.
Woman uses stun gun in Wal-Mart theft
D’Iberville police are looking for a woman who allegedly used a stun gun on a Wal-Mart employee who tried to stop her from shoplifting. Police Lt. Terry Hines told The Sun Herald the woman is wanted on a charge of robbery by assault.
Hines said police were called to the Wal-Mart about 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, after a store worker reportedly tried to stop her from leaving with unpaid merchandise. The woman allegedly pulled the stun gun from her clothes and subdued the worker before she left with the merchandise.
Man gets 60 years for making child porn
Authorities said a north Mississippi man has been sentenced to 60 years in federal prison for making and distributing child pornography.
U.S. Attorney Felicia C. Adams said in a news release that 30-year-old Brian Robinson of Potts Camp was sentenced Friday. Robinson pleaded guilty in January to charges related to him making pornographic images with a young boy and then distributing the material on the Internet.
At his plea hearing, Robinson admitted to creating various forms of child pornography and distributing it both inside and outside the United States.
Robinson’s arrest was part of an international investigation that has resulted in the arrest of 27 people, including eight in the U.S., and the identification of 138 child victims.
Driver’s license office to close
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS) has closed its driver’s license station in Grenada. An MDPS spokesperson said the decision was based on budget cuts and the condition of the current building.
He said the facility was built in the 1940s and has structural problems, including a leaky roof, that made it hard for MDPS to continue putting equipment in the building.
MDPS is working with Grenada County supervisors to find another possible location to reopen the facility.
For now, officials said residents will need to use offices in Greenwood and Batesville.
You can also renew your license on the MDPS website.
