14-year old who murdered mom to go before grand jury

Tyla Vega

VICKSBURG – The case of a 14-year old girl who allegedly shot her stepmother in the head is scheduled to go before the Warren County Grand Jury next Monday. Tyla Denise Vega remains behind bars after the May 2 murder of her stepmother, 32-year old Alicia Michelle Vega.

Lt. Randy Lewis, of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department, said Vega was denied bond after she allegedly shot her stepmother and then stole her vehicle.

Lewis confirmed that on May 2, Alicia Vega was found on the floor of her mobile home in the 100 block of Jones Road. Alicia’s teenage son returned home from school about 3 p.m., and found his mother’s body in the kitchen.

Alicia had been shot once in the head.

Lewis also confirmed that Alicia’s vehicle, a tan 2002 Dodge Durango, was missing from the residence and that her stepdaughter, Tyla, was seen by witnesses leaving in the vehicle.

A search for Tyla by authorities began and the Dodge Durango was eventually found abandoned.

After being on the run for about six days, Tyla was located at a friend’s house in Greenville by the Warren County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshals. She was taken back to Vicksburg and charged with murder.

Tyla is being held without bond.
