Suspect cut a man with a knife

A Columbus woman faces aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges following a weekend altercation in Lowndes County.

Investigators said Tori Shonta Byrd, 24, of Wheat Street, is accused of using a knife for cut Roger Rice at a residence on 8th Avenue.

Police said Byrd and Rice were involved in an altercation around 2 a.m. Sunday morning that escalated to the alleged assault.

Rice received stitches at a local hospital and was later released.

Jackson man dies in Louisiana hotel swimming pool

Authorities said a 23-year-old man from Jackson died while swimming in a hotel pool in Gretna, La.

The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Capt. Russell Lloyd of the Gretna Police Department told The Times-Picayune Jeremy Davis was swimming with a family member from the shallow end of the pool to the deep end during a family reunion when he sank to the bottom.

Lloyd said Davis was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police could not confirm of Davis’ cause of death was drowning. An autopsy will be performed to determine a cause of death.

Man dies in Attala County accident

A Pearl man died in a weekend accident involving a tractor on Sunday morning.

WTVA reported that Bob Derosier, 68, died in the accident at the Green Creek Hunting Club in the Hesterville community.

Emergency responders at the scene had to remove Derosier from under the tractor.

The accident happened around 11 a.m. It remains under investigation.

Indoor pot operation shut down in Madison Co.

Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker says his deputies and Madison police have shut down an elaborate indoor marijuana growing operation in a local subdivision.

Tucker says his office and police have developed information for several months on the operation and were tipped Monday that plants were being grown. Tucker says a room in the house had been set aside for what he said were 150-200 plants in different stages of growth.

He says there were grow lights and an indoor water filtering system in the marijuana room.

He says a woman in the house had been arrested and authorities were expecting to make another arrest. He was not releasing the names until both were in custody.

Four charged with gambling

A routine check of a club in Artesia landed four people in jail on gambling charges, WCBI reported.

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Marc Miley says when deputies checked the club on Front Street at about 8 p.m. last Wednesday, they saw several people run from the area.

Inside, deputies found four people sitting at gambling machines behind a black curtain. A large amount of cash was lying around.

Willie Poster, 61, of Artesia, Mae Ruth Gandy, 57, of Starkville, Donnail Lucious, 56, of Columbus and Sylvester Warren, 65, of Starkville, were charged with gambling.

Miley says Poster told investigators he was running the club for Robert Colbert but those allegations still are being investigated and he has not been charged.

Lucious, Gandy and Warren posted bond but Poster remains in jail on a probation violation charge.

Deputies seized the machines and the cash.
