Coroner: Police kill gunman at Lexington church

Police fatally shot the son of a church deacon Sunday morning after they were called to a church when members of the congregation started arguing over the firing of a pastor, authorities said.

Cacedrick White, 26, arrived with a shotgun and fired it once in the parking lot while police were at the church in Lexington, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said. A Lexington police officer fired back three times, wounding White. He died at a hospital.

MDOT and partners dedicate Habitat home in Jackson

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) recently held a dedication ceremony for a Habitat for Humanity project in which employees from both agencies volunteered hours of their time to help construct a beautiful 1,200 square foot home for Pedro and Shawn Galloway.
 
The ceremony was held Monday, June 17, in front of the Habitat home, located on Englewood Street in Jackson. Representatives from each agency gave remarks about the project, including: MDOT Central Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall; Vice President, Habitat for Humanity Metro Jackson, Johnny Ray; Deputy Attorney General Mike Lanford; Assistant Attorney General Roy Tipton; and Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity Metro Jackson, Cindy Griffin. Vicksburg YMCA to become sports complex

A church group has purchased the old YMCA on Halls Ferry Road and plans to convert it into a youth sports complex.

Greater Grove Street Missionary Baptist Church bought the 13,000-square-foot main building and its surrounding 6.7 acres earlier this month for $150,000, the Rev. Casey Fisher told The Vicksburg Post.

Fisher says the complex – which will be called the Education, Exercise and Empowerment Center – is planned as a multipurpose, sports-and-leisure venue and will be open for public use. […]

Historic Kilmichael church to hold homecoming

The Elkhorn Primitive Baptist Church is having their annual church homecoming on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.

Organizers of the event said the celebration is in its 36th year and will kick off with the Elkhorn School Reunion Picnic at 11 a.m. Blues great B.B. King was a student at Elkhorn when he lived in Kilmichael and has attended class reunions in the past.

A historical blues marker on Highway 413 acknowledges King’s ties to the church and the school, as well as to its founder, former slave, Syrus Bogan Henson. […]

Group says it will defend new Miss. prayer law

A nonprofit conservative group says it will provide free legal representation to Mississippi schools or districts if a new school prayer law is challenged in court.

Liberty Counsel attorney Steve Crampton told The Associated Press that the group believes the law is “perfectly within the bounds of the First Amendment.”

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed the law in late March, and it takes effect July 1. It says all Mississippi school districts must adopt a policy to allow a “limited public forum” at school events such as football games or morning announcements, to let students express religious beliefs. […]

The restoration of the historic Immanuel Church in Winona

Although many of its original members are long gone, the bells of the Immanuel Church in Montgomery County still ring at least once a month. Situated on the corner of Fairground and Summit Streets in the heart of Winona, Immanuel stands as a monument to a rich and prominent past.

And with the acquisition of grant funds totaling more than $300,000, supporters of the historical structure are determined to keep it that way.

Erected in 1909, Immanuel Church – formerly Immanuel Episcopal Church – replaced an earlier wood frame structure that was built in 1876 by Major and Mrs. Frank Hawkins. The original church was located on Summit Street nearer to the downtown area and had a large chancel window depicting the ascension of Jesus into heaven. That same stained glass window now adorns the center of the rear wall of the present building which was constructed and donated to the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi by Captain and Mrs. James C. Tuesday night, Nov. 6, was historic. Barack Obama was re-elected to the office of the presidency.

With tears flowing, I watched on my television as the president of the United States of America entered the auditorium with his wife and two daughters to the roaring applause of more than 10,000 approving supporters to offer his acceptance speech after his victory over challenger Mitt Romney.

He won the election with the help of African Americans, Latinos, women, poor, rich, moderates and young Americans…. […]

Baptist leader wants more diversity in convention

Southern Baptist Convention President Fred Luter said he wants more diversity in the 16-million-member organization.

Luter, the first black president of the convention, was in Jackson for the 177th gathering of the Mississippi Baptist Convention. After delivering a sermon at First Baptist Church of Jackson, Luter told reporters his selection as president shows a commitment to increasing diversity, but he said there’s more to be done. […]
