Court date set for man who raped girlfriend 7 times

Authorities said a Greenwood man accused of raping his ex-girlfriend on several different occasions is scheduled for his preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

City, county seek details of DOJ claims against black students

Officials in Meridian and Lauderdale County want details from the Justice Department to back up its allegations local students’ rights have been violated by jailing them for school infractions.

Earlier this month the Justice Department said officials in east Mississippi operate a “school-to-prison pipeline” that incarcerated students – mostly black and disabled – for minor school disciplinary infractions, including dress code violations and using profanity.

Tracking Hurricane Isaac; 2 counties order mandatory evacuation

While shelters are filling up in Hancock County, emergency management officials in Harrison and Jackson counties have ordered a mandatory evacuation.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm’s center – with winds near 80 mph – reached land at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in Plaquemines Parish, about 90 miles southeast of New Orleans.

Jerry Nelson, Count of ‘Sesame Street,’ dies at 78

Jerry Nelson, the puppeteer behind a delightful menagerie of characters including Count von Count on “Sesame Street” and Gobo Fraggle on “Fraggle Rock,” has died. He was 78.
