Man arrested for Workman’s Comp fraud

GRENADA COUNTY – A Grenada man has been arrested on seven counts of Worker’s Compensation Fraud, the attorney general’s office announced this week. Billy Moore, of the 300 block of South Mound, was taken into custody, Monday, Feb. 1, by investigators from the Insurance Fraud Unit of the Attorney General’s office.

Moore, a 52-year old prison guard at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, was “out on disability” and allegedly collecting worker’s compensation disability checks from the state. At the same, the attorney general’s office disclosed that Moore was working and being paid as a security guard for a private company.

Fraud charges against Moore were filed after he signed worker’s compensation checks containing a statement “swearing that he was not gainfully employed.” The attorney general’s office contends that Moore hid the fact that he was working to continue receiving disability checks.

“That makes the State of Mississippi the victim in this case,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “[And] it is our duty to prosecute and recover the money that was taken.”

Moore appeared before Judge Joseph Loper in Grenada County Circuit Court on Tuesday, and his bond was set at $10,000. He later posted bond and was released.

The Grenada County Sheriff’s Department and Grenada County District Attorney Doug Evans assisted in this case.
