Murder of Alcorn student still under investigation

NATCHEZ – An Alcorn State University student is free on bail, after authorities said she shot another student to death. Eboni Bena White, of Port Gibson, was arrested on Nov. 12, after Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis said she shot her neighbor and fellow student, Danielle Nicole Newsome five times.

According to Sheriff Davis, the shooting took place off campus at the Stallings Trailer Park on U.S. Highway 552 in Lorman, where both White, 21, and Newsome, 22, were residents. Davis said the two women had an ongoing dispute wherein Newsome accused White of trying to run over her young son as he either got on or off the school bus.

The arguments escalated, Davis said, when Newsome went to White’s trailer home, across the street from hers, on the morning of Nov. 12. Davis said neighbors witnessed the argument between the two women when White brandished a .22 caliber pistol and allegedly shot Newsome five times in the head and chest.

“The neighbors called 911,” Davis said. “And when the authorities came, they found [Ms. Newsome] in the yard. But by the time the ambulance arrived, she was dead.”

Newsome was pronounced at the scene.

Davis said White was also at the scene when deputies arrived and she was taken into custody without incident. The weapon used in the assault was recovered at the scene.

White was officially charged with murder and transported to the Claiborne County jail. Her bond was set at $35,000 which she later posted and was released.

Newsome, who once worked in the office of the Alcorn University Campus Police, was transported to the Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy. The case remains under investigation.
