Police presence increased in area

Hattiesburg police are investigation the death of a 55-year old man found dead near their station. The body of Jerry Minor was found around 6:30 a.m., when a passerby saw his body in a wooded area behind the Fat Boy Mart on Edwards Street.

Authorities have not released the cause of Minor’s death, but said they are not treating it as a homicide at this time.

Police patrol has increased in the area since the discovery of Minor’s body and an autopsy has been ordered.

Thieves break into funeral home

Leland Police said a local funeral home was broken into on July 7 and the thieves left behind evidence that may lead to an arrest. Authorities said Dillon Funeral Home on 5th Street in Leland was burglarized, but nothing appeared to missing during the initial investigation.

Police said however, that blood was found at the scene and it is being analyzed as evidence. Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 662-378-8477.

3 teens charged for robbing church

Three teens from Helena have been arrested after authorities said they broke into a church. Jackson County deputies responded to the First Baptist Church of Helena about 7:38 a.m., in reference to burglary. Two suspects, 17-year old Jacob Davidovich and 18-year old Travis Scott were subsequently arrested a few days later and charged with commercial burglary of a church.

A day later, a third suspect, 17-year old John Kelly Jordan Jr., turned himself into deputies and he was also charged with commercial burglary of a church.

During their investigation, authorities recovered two flat screen televisions and a Wii Game System that were stolen from the church.

Deputies said the case is still under investigation and they expect to make more arrests in the burglary and they also hope to recover more items stolen from the church.

Second Congressional District gets over $3.6 million in funding

Congressman Bennie Thompson recently announced funding to four recipients in the Second Congressional District by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Delta State received an award of $23,072, the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) was awarded $46,195 for an Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship, the Claiborne County Family Health Center received funds totaling $829,845 and the G.A. Carmichael Family Health Care Clinic received funding in the amount of $2,773,704.
