5-year-old dies in car accident

MATHISTON – A 5-year old boy was killed last week when he was ejected from the back seat of a car during a single-vehicle accident. Caleb Avent, of Mathiston, died at the scene, after authorities said his mother veered off the road and overturned.

On Feb. 11, about 8:40 a.m., Highway patrolmen said Keely Avent, 22, was driving a 1992 Mazda Protégé on U.S. Highway 403, when she suddenly veered off the roadway. Her car overturned and Caleb, who was not wearing a seatbelt or sitting in a car seat was thrown from the vehicle. Authorities said the car flipped over on top of Caleb where it came to a final rest.

Avent was wearing a seatbelt and reportedly, with the help of a man who lived nearby and heard the accident, lifted the front side of the vehicle where Caleb was trapped.

Webster County Coroner Steve Wells said Caleb died from his injuries and was pronounced at the scene.

Avent was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in Eupora where she was reportedly treated and released.

The accident remains under investigation.
