Motorists asked to be patient as students head back to school

GULFPORT – As school for many students across the state begins this week, law enforcement agents ask that motorists be patient and careful when traveling in designated school areas. For students in Gulfport and Harrison County, the 2011-2012 school year begins on Thursday, Aug. 4., and Police Chief Alan Weatherford reminds everyone to exercise caution and be aware of children walking to and from school.

“Citizens should use caution when approaching school bus stops and be patient when following a school bus, as it does make frequent stops,” he said. “Gulfport Police Officers will be out in [full] force assisting with traffic control around all schools starting Thursday, Aug. 4.”

Schools in Montgomery County begin on Friday, Aug. 5, Jackson Public Schools on Friday, Aug. 12 and Carroll County schools, reportedly on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Weatherford said parents should contact their child’s school to determine a school traffic plan ahead of time, as many schools do have a traffic plan in place that works better when parents abide by them.

“The plans are designed to help ensure the safety of all children,” Weatherford said.

The Gulfport Police Department will also monitor all school zones and reminds drivers that the speed limit during school zone times is posted at 15 mph. At the start of school, Weatherford said traffic is generally heavy around the elementary schools and he strongly recommends parking properly only in approved areas.

“Avoid parking along the side of the roadway and leaving your car unattended,” he said.
