Coach plead to a lesser charge

Ole Miss basketball coach Andy Kennedy is in Ohio this week as jury selections began in lawsuit against a Cincinnati cab driver. Kennedy filed the lawsuit in Cincinnati after he was arrested following an altercation with the cabbie in 2008.

Kennedy denied hitting and taunting the cab driver, but pleaded guilty last year to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct. Kennedy was sentenced to probation and community service.

The Associated Press reported that Kennedy later apologized to the cab driver and the valet, who came forward as a witness, but the coach went forward with his civil lawsuit against the pair, and they in turn have countersued.

Jackson State gets recycling grant

United States Representative Bennie Thompson said The United States Department of Agriculture has awarded $64,866 through the Solid Waste Management Grant Program to Jackson State University.

Those funds will be used to conduct educational and training workshops concerning waste reduction and recycling for local government officials in rural Mississippi.

Gulfport officer under investigation for shooting

The Harrison County District Attorney’s office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is looking into the case of a Gulfport police officer that shot a man during an incident outside a local restaurant.

Authorities said officers responded to a shots fired call at the Columns Restaurant just before midnight when they encountered a man with a gun.

The officer, who was not named, shot the suspect, who was then transported to a local hospital.

His condition is unknown.

The DA’s office was notified, which is normal protocol, and the incident remains under investigation.

Man drowns in Pontotoc

Authorities said a Tupelo man drowned in a pond on Furrs Road in Pontotoc County after he went swimming with a friend. Justin Kitchens, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene after rescuers pulled his body from the water.

Kitchens’ body was sent to the crime lab in Jackson for an autopsy.
