JACKSON, Miss. — One woman is dead after a late-night wreck Sunday. It happened just after 9 p.m near the Bailey Avenue and Northside Drive intersection in North Jackson.

Jackson police took one man into custody after he allegedly left the scene of the accident and later returned.

Family members at the scene said the victim is Billie Jefferson, a grandmother and former Jackson Public School teacher.

Police said a Ford Explorer ran a red light and hit Jefferson’s car. Her two 13-year-old grandchildren in the back seat were transported to a local hospital, police said.

The driver of the Explorer is in custody but not yet facing any charges, according to JPD Officer Joseph Daughtry.

Police said they won’t speculate about why the driver of the SUV ran from the scene and came back. They don’t know whether alcohol or excessive speed was involved in the crash.

Police will re-create the accident to determine how the driver of the SUV’s speed may have affected the crash.
