Thieves targeting Dollar General stores

News Briefs From Across The State

Fifth known store burglary this year

Authorities said several Dollar General stores have been robbed this year, with the latest occurring in Brooksville in Noxubee County. Deputies said thieves possibly entered the store, on U.S. Highway 45, through a small opening in the rear of the building.

The Dollar General in Eupora was robbed last month.

Employees at the Brooksville Dollar General alerted authorities after they arrived at the store about 6:20 a.m., on Sept. 6.

The store’s manager said the electrical and phone lines were cut during the robbery and that several thousand dollars in cash was taken from the store.

An inventory of store merchandise was also being conducted to estimate any losses.

When they arrived, the victim, who was not named, had been shot several times in the upper body. Two handguns were recovered at the scene and authorities said both weapons had been fired.

The victim was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in critical condition.

No suspects are in custody.

Scam artists targeting Tupelo water and electric customers

The Tupelo Police Department is warning consumers about the newest scam within the community. Reportedly, predators are calling Tupelo residents and telling them their water and electricity will be cut off due to a lack of payment.

Investigators said in some cases, suspects tell consumers their check was received without a signature and they must give their credit card information to prevent a disruption in service.

Police said the scam is to obtain personal information from unsuspecting victims.

Investigators assured consumers that Tupelo Water and Light does not accept payments of this sort, and they do not request any kind of personal information by telephone.

Police are urging Tupelo residents to take precautions to protect themselves.
