Body showed no signs of trauma

Authorities said an elderly man from Hamilton that had been missing for about two weeks was found dead in a field about 200 yards from his home on Stovall Crossing Road. Police said neighbors last saw Robert R. Reed on May 13, and had been looking for him for several days, but never reported it to the authorities.

Police said Reed lived alone and after an extensive search, his neighbors found his body about 2:45 p.m. on May 30.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said there was no physical trauma to Reed’s body and an autopsy confirmed that he died of natural causes due to his age and his prior medical history

Man arrested for arson; firefighter injured

WXVT is reporting that a Greenville man has been charged with arson after he allegedly started a fire that injured a firefighter. Lester E. Walls, 51, was charged with one count of arson and two counts of aggravated assault for an incident that occurred around 3:30 a.m., on May 27 at 543 S. Percy Street.

Walls was arrested the next day on unrelated charges, but an investigation of the fire led to his arrest.

Walls remains in Greenville city jail pending his initial appearance in court.

Lawsuit claims abuse at Hinds Co. juvenile center

The Associated Press is reporting that children’s advocacy groups have filed a federal lawsuit against the Henley-Young Juvenile Justice Detention Center in Hinds County, claiming young people there are being abused.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Jackson by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Disability Rights Mississippi. It seeks class action status.

The lawsuit claims, among other things, that youths in the facility are denied mental health services and face prolonged isolation, verbal abuse and threats of physical harm.

When told about the allegations in the lawsuit, detention director Dale Knight said “that’s not true.” He referred questions to Hinds County Administrator Carmen Davis.

Starkville man charged with child pornography

A 60-year old man faces up to 40 years in jail after being charged with one count of possessing child pornography. John A. Brown, of Logan Drive in Starkville, was arrested by investigator’s with the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Division/Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force and they were assisted by the Starkville Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Brown was booked into the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office.

“We’ve been steadily arresting people for this crime, but we’re about to pick up some steam when the new law goes into effect July 1st that will provide us with even more resources to go after child pornographers,” said Attorney General Hood.

The case will be prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Brandon Ogburn.
