Died with cast net still in his hand

A 41-year old man was killed Sunday afternoon when he was struck by lightning while fishing, Pascagoula police said. Bobby Dewayne Broadus was pronounced dead at the scene after officers responded to the Pascagoula City Pier about 3:09 p.m.

Lt. James DeShannon Massey, of the Pascagoula Police Department, said Broadus and some friends were fishing on July 31, when the weather turned bad.

“The friends then left the pier leaving Broadus fishing,” Massey said. “Broadus was halfway down the pier throwing a cast net into the water trying to catch fish. A witness, who was toward the end of the pier, looked back towards the shore and saw lightning strike Mr. Broadus and he fell to the ground.”

Massey said a witness to the incident ran to the shore and had a passerby call 911. When police and emergency responders arrived, they found Broadus dead, with the cast net still in his hand.

Broadus was pronounced by the coroner.
