Man charged with murder and carjacking Fed Ex truck

JACKSON – A 32-year old man is currently being held without bond after police said he allegedly murdered a Jackson man and then carjacked a Fed Ex truck at gunpoint. Charles Johnson, of Clinton, is being held at the Raymond Detention Center after he turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Officer Colendula Green, Public Information Officer for the Jackson Police Department, said the series of crimes involving Johnson began around 2:15 p.m., on Feb. 15.

Johnson went to a residential neighborhood in the 200 block of Culbertson Avenue where Green said he allegedly murdered 23-year old Eugene Roberts.

“Roberts was found in a red Pontiac slumped in the seat on the passenger side,” Green said. “The door was open and a concerned citizen called it in.”

Green said Roberts had been shot several times in the upper body and no weapon was found at the scene.

After Johnson allegedly murdered Roberts, Green said he fled the scene in a Chevy Suburban and hit another vehicle on Nimitz Avenue.

“He just sped off at a high rate of speed and hit another vehicle totaling out the suburban,” Green said. “It is our belief that Johnson was going to try to carjack that vehicle, but after the accident it wouldn’t start.”

Green said Johnson, armed with a gun, carjacked the Fed Ex truck.

“He didn’t harm the driver,” she said. “He got the truck and fled the scene in it.”

Johnson reportedly drove the Fed Ex truck to his hometown of Clinton, about an hour and a half away, and abandoned it on Dawson Street. The Clinton Police Department notified Jackson police who had the stolen truck towed away.

During the course of their investigation, Green said Johnson became a suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Around 6:30 a.m., on Feb. 16, Johnson turned himself in to the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, where he was taken into custody by the Jackson Police Department. He was charged with murder and two counts of carjacking.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
