ITTA BENA – Police chief Marvin Flowers said that he will charge a 17-year old high school student as an adult for allegedly stabbing her fellow classmate in the neck. Cashell Sanders was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 2, after Chief Flowers said she stabbed a 16-year old girl in the neck outside a friend’s house in Itta Bena.
Chief Flowers said the incident occurred while the girls, both Itta Bena residents and Leflore County High School students, were out of school for the Christmas holiday. Flowers said Sanders and the victim were texting each other when the messages turned volatile and they met at an agreed location.
“One word led to another,” Chief Flowers said. “And they met up at a residence at 804 Lamar Street, out in the yard. Words were swapped, they got into an altercation and the [girl] got stabbed on the right side of her neck.”
Chief Flowers said Sanders fled the scene and the 16-year old victim was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital by private vehicle.
“The wound was long and deep,” Flowers said. “We didn’t get the measurements of the cut, but it required several staples.”
Chief Flowers said the weapon in the attack has not been recovered, but authorities believe it may have been a pocket knife. Flowers said several people have been questioned during the investigation, but the reason for the assault has not been ascertained.
“We’re still looking into it and we’re still investigating,” Chief Flowers said. “But we don’t have a motive yet and we don’t know what the content of those text messages were. But these two ladies were friends up until this happened.”
Sanders was apprehended several hours after the attack and she was charged with aggravated assault. She was transported to the Leflore County jail and her bond was set at $15,000. She bonded out on Jan. 8.
Chief Flowers said once the investigation is complete, he will meet with the Leflore County District Attorney to determine how to proceed with the charges against Sanders
