Former Interim Chief Lewis Retires From JPD

JACKSON, Miss. — A former interim Jackson police chief announced Friday that he’s retiring from the Jackso Police Department.

Tyrone Lewis has served as deputy chief of the Community Services Division since Rebecca Coleman was named chief last November. Before Coleman was chosen by Mayor Harvey Johnson as Jackson’s top police official, Lewis held the post in an interim position. The late Mayor Frank Melton named Lewis as interim chief in April 2009, after Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin stepped down from the post.

Lewis is a 28-year veteran of JPD.

In December 2007, Lewis was demoted from deputy chief to sergeant because of allegations that his son held private parties at the JPD Training Academy. Lewis was also reassigned from the training academy to planning and research.

When McMillin took over as chief in 2008, Lewis’ rank was restored to commander and he went back to running the training academy, where he remained until he was named interim chief.

Lewis said his retirement went into effect on Friday.

Coleman also released several other command staff changes on Friday.

Deputy Chief Gerald Jones is now a lieutenant in the patrol division. Kenneth Goodrum, is no longer the commander over Precinct 4; he is now a sergeant in Precinct 1.

Cmdr. Wendell Watts has been moved from Precinct 5 to Precinct 4.

Acting Lt. Allen White becomes Precinct 5 commander.
