AKAs to celebrate Founders’ Day

JACKSON, Miss. – The Metro Jackson Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will celebrate Founders’ Day on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the historic Woodworth Chapel on the campus of Tougaloo College.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Legacy of Sisterhood and Service,” with the Reverend Pamela Bates Porch as guest speaker.  Reverend Bates Porch is the immediate past Central Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha and is a life member of the sorority. The Founders’ Day program is open to the public and all Greek and service organizations are encouraged to attend. A reception is scheduled immediately following the program at the Tougaloo College President’s Home.

“This is a tremendous occasion for Alpha Kappa Alpha in the Metro Jackson area, and it allows us to fellowship with hundreds of members and those from other service organizations,” says 2011 Founders’ Day Chairman Dr. Dora Washington. “We will reconfirm our commitment to the principles upon which this wonderful sisterhood was founded and work tirelessly to preserve its legacy for the generation of young women to follow.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The first Metro Jackson chapter began 77 years ago and has grown to a total of six chapters with approximately 400 financial and active members. They include Beta Delta Omega, Rho Lambda Omega, Upsilon Upsilon Omega, Gamma Omicron, Gamma Rho, and Lambda Iota.  Beta Delta Omega was chartered in 1934 in Jackson and is one of Mississippi’s oldest African American Greek organizations. The Rho Lambda Omega Chapter was chartered in 1988, followed by Upsilon Upsilon Omega in 1998.  Gamma Omicron was established in 1949 at Tougaloo College, followed by Gamma Rho in the same year, one day later at Jackson State University, and Lambda Iota in 1977 at Millsaps College.

These local chapters have provided vital community service to thousands of families and agencies through signature programs and initiatives. This includes housing, healthcare, food, clothing, financial assistance, scholarships, minority business development, tutorial and mentoring services, and volunteerism for local nursing homes and after-school programs.  Members also provide etiquette training and performing arts to pre-teen and teenage girls through pageants and cotillions.
