Round Island Lighthouse open for first time in 6 months

A lighthouse on the Mississippi Gulf Coast has reopened to the public, after being shuttered six months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tours of the Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula are available every Friday and Saturday.

“You totally can just be flexible with your time,” lighthouse tour guide Mac Nelson told WLOX-TV. “If you want to just stay up there awhile and just look at the scenery, the view up there is beautiful from the top.”

The lighthouse is at the foot of the Pascagoula River bridge but was built in 1859 off the coast of Pascagoula on Round Island. After years of enduring damage by hurricanes, the structure was moved off the island by the city and restored in 2010.

Walking paths, a park, a pier and boat launch have been built around the structure.
