Holy Child Jesus alum helps to drive next event

Special to The Mississippi Link

When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. came to Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement, one of the communities he visited was the small town of Canton. As Dr. King searched for a place in Canton to speak, many churches and organizations would not allow him to speak for fear of retaliation. There was one place in town that always opened its doors to Dr. King. That place is Holy Child Jesus Church and School, located at 315 Garrett Street.

Holy Child Jesus School continues to provide a safe environment for students to learn, grow and mature into their God-given abilities. The current principal, Felicia Jackson-Stewart, an alumnus of the school, continues to build on the work of her predecessors. “Holy Child Jesus School has committed families who contribute their money, time, talents and their most precious possession-their children- to the school’s care.” “It is my goal to continue to provide an environment of educational excellence so that our current students will follow in the footsteps of our alumnus who have made so many positive contributions to the local and national community.”

Stewart said that according to The National Catholic Education Association, (NCEA) an average of 61 percent of operational expenses at Catholic schools are covered by tuition. The other 39 percent comes from endowments, fundraisers, parish subsidies, and annual funds. “All schools are challenged to bridge this gap to keep tuition affordable for parents.” We are blessed to have an active, supportive alumni base who generously give back to the school. Many of us credit Holy Child with giving us a solid academic foundation.”

One of Holy Child Jesus’ alumnus has donated a Pontiac Grand Am to the school to assist with fundraising efforts. Stewart is asking the community to assist the school in this effort by purchasing a $10 car raffle ticket. Proceeds will be used to offset increasing operational costs, and to keep tuition and fees affordable.

For additional information, or to purchase a ticket, please contact the school at 601-859-4168 or visit www.hcjschool .net. The drawing will be held during the school’s annual Gospel Concert on Feb 21, at Canton High School.
