MDES Has Staying Power

The Mississippi Link has just learned that The Mississippi State Legislature has voted and passed House Bill 1756 which reauthorizes MDES.

Les Range serves as the Executive Director of MDES and shared the information with us in his own words. Below is the press release verbatim.

I am pleased to report that, this morning, the Mississippi State Senate passed H. B. No. 1756.  This bill reauthorizes the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) for 1 year until June 30, 2011.  While we worked for permanent authorization of MDES this was the will of our legislative bodies.  We respect the legislative process and appreciate knowing that we have another year to do our jobs and serve the citizens of Mississippi who need our services.  The provision to change the alternate base period for determining Unemployment Compensation eligibility was not adopted.

There are too many people to thank by name but I am extremely proud of the MDES team who worked to prepare information and provide answers the many questions we received during this process.   Some of you worked at the Capitol and others worked from behind the scenes.  Thanks to all of you for your commitment and dedication and contribution to making this happen.  Also, I’d like the thank Governor Haley Barbour and his staff for their strong support of MDES.  I do want to point out other one person by name and that is Senator Dean Kirby.  He did a stellar job handling our reauthorization, both in the Finance Committee and on the Senate floor.  He is a true friend of our agency.

As we continue to serve our state’s citizen this coming year, I want all of us to remember our commitment to Customer Service.  I want us to be known as the State Agency that provides the best customer service in Mississippi.  Remember that the person on the other side of our desk or at the other end of the phone line deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.  I ask each of you to rededicate yourself to helping people get the benefits to which they are entitled or the training and counseling they need or the answers to any questions they may have.
