Brandon man kills his girlfriend

Authorities said a Brandon man allegedly confessed to a neighbor Saturday night that he shot and killed his girlfriend. Sixty-one year old Lynda Tate was found dead inside the home after Brandon Police were called to the scene of the fatal shooting on Dec. 3.

Investigators said a neighbor made the 911 call when 47-year-old Robert Floyd McGuire reportedly knocked on his door and said he shot his girlfriend at the residence in the 2000 block of Red Oak Drive.

Police found Tate’s body and said the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

McComb woman killed in La. accident, child survives

State Police in Kentwood, La. are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman from McComb, Miss., according to State Police spokesman Trooper Nick Manale.

Brandy Green was headed north on Interstate-55, two miles north of the LA 38 Kentwood exit in Tangipahoa Parish, when she drifted into the grass median. Officials said Green overcorrect to the right, and sent her Nissan Sentra into a tailspin. The car slid off the interstate and hit a large tree on the east side of the interstate, killing Green.

Green was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Manale. A one-year-old child was in car, but was not injured.

“Both occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash and impairment is not suspected with toxicology results pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab,” said a statement from Manale.

Authorities are uncertain as to Green’s relationship to the child.

Flu case reported in Tate County

Mississippi Department of Health officials said Monday that the state’s first reported case of flu has been confirmed in Tate County.

State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier said the report should serve as a reminder that it is time to get flu shots.

“The flu shot takes one to two weeks to produce immunity, and although flu season usually peaks in January through March, it sometimes reaches high levels as early as December,” Currier said in a news release.

Flu activity is monitored through the Influenza-like Illness Sentinel Surveillance System, made up of health care providers in Mississippi report the percentage of patients with flu-like symptoms to a statewide database, according to the news release.

State health officials use this information to determine the spread of influenza in Mississippi. Health care providers also submit samples for testing to the state lab.

Basic infection control measures can help reduce the spread of flu, Currier said in the news release. She said measures include covering your mouth when coughing and sneezing, staying at home when you or your children are sick and washing your hands frequently.
