JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — The state Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a Kiln man sentenced to serve 15 years in prison for molesting a 5-year-old girl.
Robert Deyarmett was convicted of two counts of touching a child for lustful purposes in 2012 in Hancock County.
Prosecutors say Deyarmett was arrested April 3, 2011, the day after he inappropriately touched the girl, who was a family acquaintance. The child testified during the trial.
Prosecutors say a crime lab expert testified that the seminal fluid located on the child’s clothing was a match to the DNA of Deyarmett.
The Appeals Court on Tuesday rejected Deyarmett’s arguments that the evidence didn’t support a conviction. The court says there was sufficient evidence from the crime lab and the child’s testimony to convict Deyarmett.
