Dr. Donna Oliver to speak at Alumni Scholarship Luncheon in Jackson

Dr. Donna Hill Oliver, President of Mississippi Valley State University, will deliver the keynote luncheon address at the Eighteenth Annual Business Scholarship Luncheon of the Jackson – Hinds Chapter of the Mississippi Valley State University National Alumni Association.

Dr. Oliver is the sixth president and first female to head MVSU. Previous luncheon keynote speakers include several distinguished business, education and political leaders who have addressed our luncheons. Luncheon speakers have included Congressman Bennie Thompson, Senators Thad Cochran and Trent Lott, businessmen Leroy Walker and Cottrell Webster, Lt. Governors Ronnie Musgrove and Amy Tuck, and Alumni Dr. Samuel McGee, the later Rev. Eugene McLemore and Dr. Roy Hudson, Time Warner’s William “Bill” Farmer and Secretary of State Eric Clark.

Mary Crump, president of the Jackson – Hinds Chapter, says “Our luncheons over the years have raised more than $200,000 to support scholarships for students attending MVSU.” The Metro Jackson Area businesses, organizations, churches and individuals have been very supportive of our efforts. They know that 100% of their contribution goes directly to the MVSU campus.”

MVSU, better known by many as “The Valley”, is Mississippi’s youngest state-supported institution of higher learning. MVSU, like other state supported institutions will be greatly impacted by the state’s economic challenges. The Valley receives about 25% of its funding from state government.

“It is not too late to be a sponsor or buy a table of ten in support of needy students, stated Mary Crump. The many Valley students certainly help to ease the teacher shortage in Mississippi. Investing in educating our citizens is the wise decision to make.”

The general public is invited and urged to support the Eighteenth Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Clarion Hotel and Suites on December 4, 2009. “You should kickoff the holiday season with music from the great Valley Choir in mini-concert, remarked Mary.”
