Man wanted in shooting death surrenders

Columbus police said a man wanted in the shooting death of a 29-year-old man has turned himself in.

WTVA reported that 19-year-old Derrick D. Nelson, of Columbus, surrendered to Police Chief Selvain McQueen around 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25.

Click it or Ticket underway for Memorial Day weekend

The National Click it or Ticket campaign starts Monday, May, 21, in advance of Memorial Day and goes through June 3.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for drivers and passengers not wearing their seat belts, WDAM reported.

Mississippi State’s Renfroe wins Ferriss Trophy

The first time Mississippi State coach John Cohen saw Hunter Renfroe play baseball, he marveled at his natural ability.

Three years later, he’s also in awe of his work ethic.

The two traits helped Renfroe have a breakout season. On May 20th, he was named the winner of the C Spire Ferriss Trophy during a ceremony at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

The award, voted on by a panel of professional scouts, college coaches and a media member, is given to Mississippi’s top college baseball player. The 6-foot-1, 216-pound Renfroe leads the Bulldogs with a .362 batting average, 15 homers, 51 RBIs and nine stolen bases. […]

NAACP honors former leader, Medgar Evers, in Jackson

NAACP leaders from around the country gathered in Jackson recently to honor the memory of their former leader, Medgar Evers and to hold their annual meeting.

Evers was assassinated nearly 50 years ago outside his home in Jackson.

NAACP president Benjamin Todd Jealous and board chairwoman Roslyn Brock helped Evers’ widow, Myrlie Evers-Williams, lay a wreath at the home, now a museum on Thursday, May 16.

Evers-Williams told nearly 200 people that she still remembers hearing the shot that killed her husband in their carport on June 12, 1963. She and their three young children, Darrell, Reena and Van, were waiting up for him. […]

Historic Kilmichael church to hold homecoming

The Elkhorn Primitive Baptist Church is having their annual church homecoming on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.

Organizers of the event said the celebration is in its 36th year and will kick off with the Elkhorn School Reunion Picnic at 11 a.m. Blues great B.B. King was a student at Elkhorn when he lived in Kilmichael and has attended class reunions in the past.

A historical blues marker on Highway 413 acknowledges King’s ties to the church and the school, as well as to its founder, former slave, Syrus Bogan Henson. […]

Dems pick Lumumba in Jackson mayor runoff

Jackson City Councilman Chokwe Lumumba (SHOW-kway Lu-MOOM-bah) has defeated businessman Jonathan Lee in the Democratic primary runoff for Jackson mayor.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that unofficial results show the 65-year-old Lumumba winning 55% of the vote Tuesday.

The Democratic nominee is expected to become mayor. No Republican is running, though independent candidates Francis Smith, Jr., Richard Williams, Jr., and Cornelius Griggs are on the June 4 general election ballot. The new term begins July 1. […]

Case-Price Named New Director of Childrens Center at Southern Miss

Sarah Case-Price began her affiliation with The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi more than a dozen years ago as a student worker.

On July 1, she will take over the reins as director.

Case-Price has served in several capacities at the center since becoming a full-time staff member in 2006 – most recently as assistant director. She takes over for acting Director Cindy Bivins, who will continue to help with the center as a volunteer. […]

Ex-Biloxi mayor still denies role in killings

Former Biloxi Mayor Pete Halat, now free from prison, still says he had no part in a murder plot that led to him spending almost 16 years in federal prison.

Halat told WLOX-TV that he had “absolutely nothing” to do with the murders of Harrison County Circuit Judge Vincent Sherry and his wife, Margaret, in 1987.

Sherry and Halat had been law partners starting in 1981. Halat was elected mayor 1989, losing a re-election bid in 1993.

Halat was convicted in 1997 of conspiracy to commit racketeering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
