TUESDAY: Skies are clear this morning with pretty cool temperatures in the lower 40s for most locations. Even a few 30s right now as you head out the door, with high pressure continuing to allow for clear and cool nights. But today we will start to increase some cloud cover, certainly more clouds than yesterday. But we still warm nicely just a bit above normal for early November, with highs back in the middle 70s.

WEDNESDAY: We continue with the warmth until Thursday, when our next cold front moves through. Cooler air will settle in for the weekend with highs in the 60s. But until then we’re going to be warmer and mostly cloudy now for the next two days, no rain until maybe Wednesday night at the earliest. High temperatures tomorrow will once again be in the middle 70s.

VETERANS DAY: As a cold front approaches, it looks like our next chance of rain and thunderstorms will be on Veterans Day. Thursday morning is really when the line of showers and storms will arrive along the Mississippi River. Pushing through the Jackson Metro by lunchtime on Veterans Day, clearing though by late afternoon. So just keep in mind for your Veterans Day plans, that rain will be likely, but it won’t be a washout. Just a narrow line pushing east through the morning and afternoon. No severe weather is expected.

WEEKEND: Behind that front, cooler air on the way. Highs in the 50s and 60s with some lows near 40 heading into the weekend and next week.

Dominican Republic drug trafficker sentenced to over 24 years in prison

A Dominican man was sentenced to 293 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute and attempt to distribute cocaine, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca and Acting Special Agent in Charge Jack P. Staton of Homeland Security Investigations in New Orleans.
33-year-old Antony Daniel Abreu, a citizen of the Dominican Republic and resident of New York, was found guilty following a seven day trial by a jury in July, 2021, on two counts of conspiracy and attempted drug trafficking.
The trial testimony established that Abreu conspired with five others in the Dominican Republic, Philadelphia, PA, and New York, NY, to purchase 17 kilos of cocaine in Gulfport. The drugs were to be taken back to New York in a hidden compartment of a car that had been shipped from Philadelphia.  Three defendants were apprehended in downtown Gulfport during the operation.
Abreu and defendant Darrell Young went to trial and were both found guilty.  The third defendant, Christopher Nguyen, entered a guilty plea prior to trial.  Young and Nguyen will be sentenced in January, 2022.
Abreu was sentenced on Thursday, November 4, 2021 in Gulfport. In addition to his prison term of 293 months,  he was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and serve 5 years of supervised release after completing his term of imprisonment.
Homeland Security Investigations investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Annette Williams and Jonathan Buckner prosecuted the case. […]

Governor Tate Reeves update on vaccine mandates, rising crime and medical marijuana

Governor Tate Reeves addressed numerous issues during an interview with SuperTalk Mississippi this morning.
VACCINE MANDATES:
Mississippi is either already challenging or will challenge 3 different Biden Administration vaccine mandates.  Governor Tate Reeves explained that they’re fighting the OSHA mandate for companies with over 100 employees, the defense contractor regulation, and the requirement that all health care workers get vaccinated.  “In one of the cases that we filed Friday the 5th Circuit Court in New Orleans issued a stay.   And we’re very clear that the grave concerns that this particular order put into effect from a constitutional standpoint meant that they had to immediately stay it.  They did it over the weekend.  They did it within 24 hours of Mississippi filing suit,” Reeves told us.
RISING CRIME:
Efforts to defund police have backfired in some cities, and when it comes to fighting crime, Governor Tate Reeves wants to do the opposite.  He recognizes that Hinds County Courts are behind on cases, and belives that there aren’t enough police in the city of Jackson.  “As you know we created the Capitol police.  We have 78 officers today.  We’re going to ask the legislature for funding to double that particular police force in size.  We think if we can go to 150-160 officers that’s gonna help us.”
MEDICAL MARIJUANA:
Medical marijuana supporters have been very vocal in their frustrations with the Governor for not calling a special session.  Reeves detailed a number of concerns during an interview on The Gallo Show this morning, but one particular quote pretty much summed up his thoughts.  “The bill as it currently exists lends itself much more to recreational than to medical.”  He said that concerns him significantly.  “It’s the reason we have not had a special session yet.”
