Suspect caught in Church’s Chicken kidnapping and rape

GREENWOOD – A Greenwood man has been arrested and charged six months after he allegedly kidnapped a woman from a Church’s Chicken parking lot and then raped her. Tonnie Carroll, 42, has been charged with kidnapping and rape and his bond was set at $50,000.

Greenwood Police Chief Henry Purnell said his department didn’t have enough evidence to arrest Carroll at the time of the alleged assault, but DNA results from the crime lab provided what they needed to bring him in.

“The victim provided DNA and other evidence at the time of the attack,” Purnell said. “And Carroll being a convict, it wasn’t too hard to get his DNA.”

On May 25, 2010, about 1:30 a.m., Purnell said Carroll allegedly pushed the victim into his car in the parking lot of Church’s Chicken, on the U.S. Highway 82 west bypass, in Greenwood. Carroll reportedly drove the victim to County Road 512 where he allegedly raped her.

Purnell said Carroll then dropped the victim off near a residential area and left.

“She walked to a trailer [home] and called her mother and her mother came and took her to Greenwood-Leflore Hospital,” he said.

Purnell said the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department was also involved in the initial investigation because although the victim was kidnapped within city limits, the alleged rape occurred in the county.

Carroll was convicted of robbery in 2000 and served four years with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
