Robert Kennedy Jr. to headline the Evers/B.B. King Homecoming

Mississippi will welcome Robert Kennedy Jr. to the magnolia state as he serves as keynote speaker for the Second Annual Medgar Homecoming Banquet, a major part of the Medgar Evers Homecoming celebration. The banquet will be held at the Regency Hotel on June 12 at 7 p.m.

This year marks the 46th year that the planning committee has honored Evers’ legacy and his major contributions to Mississippi’s civil rights.

“When I asked Robert Jr. if he would come speak, he said, ‘Yes, I’ll come,’” said Charles Evers, the brother of the slain NAACP Field Secretary. He and Blues legend B.B. King initially established the celebration.

Kennedy, the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy, is an environmental lawyer and co-host of Ring of Fire on the Air America radio network.

In a telephone interview with The Mississippi Link, Charles Evers, owner and general manager of WMPR Radio, said the Evers and the Kennedys have been friends for a long time.

“Medgar was a good friend with President John Kennedy, and I became a friend of Robert Sr. The Kennedys and the Evers have always fought for the cause of justice for all,” the former Mayor of Fayette said. The celebration will also include a B.B. King concert at the Old Big Lots Building, a memorial with Bishop Joe Simon, a Medgar Evers parade and more.
