(JACKSON, Miss.) – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Jackson (MS) Alumnae Chapter will host Jabberwock 2009: “An Evening in the Garden of Enchantment” at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 18 at the Rose Embly McCoy Auditorium. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance from members of the sorority or at the door the night of the event.
Eighteen girls will vie for the titles of Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Jabberwock.
The biannual event is the largest fundraiser for the sorority, which sponsors several community service programs throughout the metro Jackson area.
Jabberwock is one of the national projects of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., which emphasizes talent, pageantry and entertainment. Since 1925, Jabberwock has been one of the sorority’s fundraising events. However, in recent years, it has evolved into a major cultural activity for young ladies. Contestants, which range in age from 5 to 18, have participated in a variety of cultural, social and educational experiences. Among those are the Mother and Daughter Luncheon and the sorority’s first Father and Daughter Cook-off.
“These young women and their families have worked very hard over several months on their performances and fundraising,” said Erma Johnson, president of the chapter. “We congratulate them and thank them all. Their work will help other girls and needy families in this community.”
Among the sorority’s charitable efforts are wellness fairs, financial workshops and cultural awareness activities, and Delta Academy/Delta Gems mentoring programs for girls.
“The contestants are beautiful examples of what we hope other young women would strive to be,” said Yvette Mitchell, committee chairperson. “We are honored to have them be a part of Jabberwock 2009.”
