Teen among those killed

Two people were killed and another remains hospitalized in critical condition following a Friday night traffic accident in Water Valley.

Police Chief Mike King says Hailey Marmino, 18, of Batesville and Geneva Hervey, 47, of Water Valley died in the wreck on Blackmur Drive at the South Street intersection around 7 p.m.

King says Goldie Hervey, 46, of Water Valley was taken to the MED in Memphis where he remains in critical condition.

He says the vehicles collided head-on.

The accident remains under investigation.

Forrest Co. man pleads guilty to sexual battery

A Forrest County man has pleaded guilty to sexual battery in Forrest County Circuit Court and received a suspended sentence.

The Hattiesburg American reports 29-year-old Sam Joseph Richey Jr. was arrested in September 2011 and charged with one count of sexual battery of a child under the age of 14 and one count of touching of a child for lustful purposes – a charge commonly referred to as fondling. He bonded out of jail two days later.

Circuit Judge Bob Helfrich ordered that Richey must have no contact with the victim, complete 300 hours of community service and register as a sex offender.

Man faces kidnapping, assault charges in Biloxi

Biloxi police say a 35-year-old man is facing charges that include parental kidnapping, grand larceny and felony child abuse.

Vandy Bell Lewis Jr., was arrested Jan. 4. He is accused of taking an infant from its mother during an argument, assaulting the mother, stealing her car and driving off with the child.

Police say the infant was recovered in New Orleans with the help of the New Orleans Police Department.

The infant was not seriously injured.

Authorities say Lewis traveled back to Biloxi and dropped off the mother’s vehicle, hoping he would not be arrested.

Elementary student expelled over gun

An elementary school student has been expelled for bringing a gun to school.

The Daily Corinthian reports that the incident occurred Dec. 18 but information was just released Wednesday, Jan. 9 by Alcorn schools superintendent Gina Rogers Smith.

Smith says a student at Kossuth Elementary reported to the teacher that another student was carrying a gun. The teacher contacted the office and administrators removed the child and the child’s possessions from the classroom.

Smith says an unloaded .22 caliber pistol was found but there was no ammunition in the child’s possession. School officials notified the sheriff’s department and the superintendent’s office.
