Former Mississippi Supreme Court Justice William Joel Blass of Pass Christian has died. Blass died Oct. 23, four days after his 95th birthday.

Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. of Jackson said, “He was a great legal scholar and outstanding leader of the bar for many years. He lived professionalism by example and was an inspiration to attorneys and judges.”

Tuesday night, Nov. 6, was historic. Barack Obama was re-elected to the office of the presidency.

With tears flowing, I watched on my television as the president of the United States of America entered the auditorium with his wife and two daughters to the roaring applause of more than 10,000 approving supporters to offer his acceptance speech after his victory over challenger Mitt Romney.

He won the election with the help of African Americans, Latinos, women, poor, rich, moderates and young Americans…. […]

MBN: Diet pills from China leads arrest in Vicksburg

Authorities say the arrest of a Texas man in Mississippi is related to a shipment of more than 100,000 diet pills from China.

Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director Marshall Fisher said in a news release the pills contain a substance banned in the United States. Fisher says the substance has been linked to heart attacks and strokes.

New York firefighters cancel Mississippi toy drive

Christmas would have been off for many South Mississippi children back in 2005 as their families struggled to get back on their feet after Hurricane Katrina, but New York firefighters collected toys, loaded up several trucks and delivered Christmas to the Coast. Since then the firefighters have made the 1,500 mile journey every Christmas.

Biloxi-Ocean Springs Junior Auxiliary President Jessica Dukes said, “We have benefited so much from the New York City firemen and we are so grateful for what they have done for us for the past several years in the Mississippi Santa Project. We were saddened to hear they have now been devastated and the firemen where they live is actually one of the hard hit areas.” […]

Baptist leader wants more diversity in convention

Southern Baptist Convention President Fred Luter said he wants more diversity in the 16-million-member organization.

Luter, the first black president of the convention, was in Jackson for the 177th gathering of the Mississippi Baptist Convention. After delivering a sermon at First Baptist Church of Jackson, Luter told reporters his selection as president shows a commitment to increasing diversity, but he said there’s more to be done. […]

RHS senior dies after being injured in pick-up football game

Funeral services are scheduled for today, Nov. 8, for a 17-year-old Richton High School senior who died Sunday after being injured during a game of pick-up football on the school’s baseball field.

Alex Lott was rushed to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg Friday after authorities said he and several other students were playing touch football when Lott “stumbled and fell awkwardly.” […]

Woman sought in fatal shooting

HATTIESBURG – Authorities in Hattiesburg have secured a warrant for a woman they believe shot her neighbors Monday, killing one and leaving another seriously injured.

Hattiesburg Police Department spokesman Lt. Jon Traxler said they are looking for Tamira Peoples, 37, in association with a shooting at the Briarfield apartments near the corner of East Second and Gordon streets.

Economy Top Issue in Mississippi: EXIT POLLS

More than half of Mississippi voters said the economy was the top issue on their minds as they voted in the presidential race Tuesday, according to a preliminary exit poll conducted for The Associated Press and other news organizations.

The economy was the most important issue, by a wide margin, while the deficit and health care were more distant concerns. A small share of voters listed foreign policy as the most important issue.
