The Redemption of America

‘One day, there will be a black president’ what a hollow prophecy.

In 1964 both Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. felt there would be a black president, for Kennedy within 40 years and King, less than that. These hollow prophetic words are now a reality but really, who could have imagined these words would ring true in 2009.

In that great museum where there is kept the ledger firsts for black folks, you know the “First black to…” do this or that. This has got to be at the very top.

President Barack Obama has certainly been the greatest event to ever happen in American governmental history, arguably.

The hollow prophecy that one day there will be a black president is neither hollow nor prophecy, it is fact. This Nation has cleared a hurdle in our time, where we must know, that we are just simply blessed to be alive to witness and for many participate in its being.

But even now, after the triumphant journey of President Obama to the White House, how much have you been able to absorb? My goodness, when something is intended to happen in this world, it will happen. “Big Bang Theory,” that this is a divine imprint on American history just as the lessons of living and the lessons of dying were realized by the Kennedys, or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This magnificent time in history offers substance to the often wasted term “epic proportions.” America may finally be on the track to fulfill its destiny … a destiny I believe that has its roots in the book of Genesis. You remember, the Tower Of Babel…when God scattered his people and made them, in essence, different. It continues to be differences that separate us but now, in spite of differences America rose above its history of racism, bias, discrimination, it rose above the tide of blood that flowed because of hatred for its people, America ignored the hollowness of the statement to little black children, that one day they can be president, America has been Redeemed! This is the era for the Redemption of America. American has been redeemed to fulfill its legacy.

Everybody did not get there at the same time as many told candidate Obama, “it is not your time,” that he only meant defeat to the Democratic Party. “The Clintons were good to us and we won’t abandon them now.” But few could see then, that this was movement of the people, and not the Party.

There were those who told Dr. Martin Luther King “no” to a non-violent approach to change. But Martin had to keep reminding us that this movement was a God thing and it was His will. This modern movement is a God thing. Never mind the political capital gained, we have divine capitol and my hope, my prayer is that we do not spend it on the mundane interests of a few or not realize that this movement, is a movement of God’s intervention.

America is freed from the dark and decadent times known as the Bush- Chaney era and the light is bright, it’s warm and it’s filled with hope, it’s filled with proof that “Yes We Can.” It is now our time, not just black folk but “…all God’s children…” time, to get it right. This is our time, Barack Obama is our president and now we must do our duty, to hear and answer the call to service, this is the time, we are the people, let’s treat this like God is saying to America and perhaps the world, ‘Get it right, this time!’
