Young blues band to appear on BET tonight

TUPELO – A Tupelo-based blues band made up of three young siblings and their father, will perform on a new BET television show tonight at 10 p.m.

Homemade Jamz Blues Band, featuring 17-year old Ryan Perry on lead guitar and vocals, his 15-year old brother Kyle on bass and their 10-year old sister, Taya, on drums, will perform with legendary percussionist, Sheila E., on BET’s new hit program, The Mo’Nique Show.

The Mo’Nique Show, which made its debut to late night television last Monday, Oct. 5, has featured several big name performers in the black entertainment industry including Queen Latifah, Steve Harvey and the cast of “The House of Payne.” Tonight’s episode will also feature CNN commentator Soledad O’Brien.

Officially formed in 2005, Homemade Jamz, with their father, Renaud, on harmonica, continues to captivate and mesmerize audiences across the country with their  energetic and soulful blues style that just seems to come naturally.

According to their father, the group began when Ryan was seven years old, and found his father’s guitar in a closet.

“I bought it and didn’t do anything with it,” Renaud said. “But Ryan found it, and asked me could he have it and I said yes.”

That was around 1999 when the family returned to Tupelo from Germany, where Renaud was serving in the military. Shortly thereafter, Ryan’s parents signed him up for guitar lessons.

Eventually, their younger son, Kyle, found his niche with the bass guitar, and 6-year old, Taya, soon joined the act on drums.

The success of Homemade Jamz has heightened as they continue to win accolades praising their talent and originality. In 2008, they were voted the best new blues artist by the West Coast Blues Society. In 2007, they were the youngest blues band in history to enter the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., where they won first place. They also won first place at the Third Annual Blues Challenge sponsored by the Indianola Blues Society in November 2006.

They’ve been featured on local and national television shows, and in 2008, they signed with a major record label and recorded their first CD, “Pay Me No Mind” with original lyrics and music written by the group. They’ve since recorded a second album, “I Got Blues For You,” and they continue to perform and compete across the country.
