Woman robbed

An employee of a Jackson gas station was robbed and her car stolen, after police said she was involved in a staged car accident. According to printed reports, the woman left the Murphy USA Gas Station on U.S. Highway 18 on Tuesday, to deposit the store’s cash at a local bank when she was involved in an accident on Greenway Drive and Robinson Road Extension. According to police, two black men jumped out of the other car, robbed the employee at gunpoint and took her car, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

The woman was not injured, but was able to give police a description of the two men. Police said her car, and the suspect’s car, a Volvo, were found at the Summer Park Apartments on Chadwick Drive. Printed reports said the Volvo had been stolen from a previous carjacking.

Phony bills spotted in Greenwood

Greenwood Police are looking into a number of counterfeit $100 bills being passed throughout the Delta. The latest victim of the counterfeit scam was Sanjay Patel, the owner of America’s Best Inn and Suites on U.S. Highway 82. When a customer attempted to pay with a $100 bill last weekend, Patel used his currency pen to authenticate the bill, which was fake. Patel told police this was the second time he’s received a counterfeit $100 bill this month.

Other phony bills have also been tagged in local stores in Greenwood. Anyone falling victim to a counterfeit bill is to notify the Greenwood Police Department or the U.S. Secret Service in Jackson.

Fatality victim in accident identified

The identity of a man killed Saturday has been released by the Greenville Police Department. Kevin Vaughn, 33, was killed Saturday, Dec. 5, when authorities said he lost control of his vehicle, a newer model Dodge Durango, on Fairview Avenue and crashed into a tree. Vaughn was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

Pair arrested; ties to burglary ring

Two men were arrested last Friday for burglary and authorities believe they may be connected to a larger burglary ring. James Moore and Jamie Purifoy were taken into custody late Friday night after police were called about a suspicious vehicle near Fish Farm Road and U.S. Highway 438. When Washington County deputies arrived, burglary tools were found in the suspect’s car. Officials believe the two men are tied to an operation that may consist of up to five people. The case remains under investigation. Authorities encourage residents to call police if they see suspicious vehicles or activity in their neighborhoods.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

Two men were arrested last Friday after authorities found drugs in their vehicle. William Lundy and Shun Paul Banks were taken into custody after Washington County officials pulled them over late Friday night for a routine traffic stop near Colorado Street. During a search of the vehicle, authorities reportedly found 38 rocks of crack cocaine with a street value of over $1,000. Both men were charged with possession with the intent to distribute.
