Car sets apartment duplex on fire

A Lowndes County woman and her teenager daughter were injured when their car exploded early Friday morning. Authorities said 40-year old Kimberly Diane Watkins and her 16-year old daughter, Taylor Nicole Watkins, were driving on Military Road about 3:30 a.m., Feb. 11, when the car suddenly exploded.

Authorities said the car came to final rest near an apartment complex setting several apartments on fire.

The woman and her daughter were reportedly later seen walking down the street. Both sustained moderate burns, but their condition is unknown at this time.

There were no reported injuries from the fire.

The fire and the explosion remain under investigation.

Crime Stoppers tip leads to arrest

A Crime Stoppers tip led police to a man wanted in two separate burglaries. Quincy Lavell Martin, 22, of the 1200 block of Dickerson Road, in Steens, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary/breaking and entering a dwelling.

Authorities said they received a tip as to Martin’s whereabouts and he was apprehended and arrested without incident at the Stone Gate Apartments at 634 31st Avenue North.

No bond or court date has been set for Martin.

Man robbed at Columbus motel

Columbus police responded to the scene of disturbance after a man said he was beaten and robbed at a local inn. Leonard Cureton, 45, was arrested and charged with robbery after authorities said he robbed a man at the Gilmer Inn on Jan. 29.

The victim told police that Cureton knocked at his door at the Inn, at 321 Main Street, and said he owed him money. The victim told Cureton he didn’t owe him any money and closed the door.

Cureton returned a short time later and when the victim opened the door, Cureton allegedly forced his way in and began hitting the victim. While the victim was on the floor, Cureton went through his pockets and allegedly stole an undisclosed amount of cash.

Cureton was arrested and no bond or court date has been set.
