Suspects charged in shooting of 3 USM football players

HATTIESBURG – Police have charged three people in connection with the shooting of three football players from the University of Southern Mississippi. On Nov. 14, Martez Smith, Tim Green and Deddrick Jones were at the Remington Hunt Club in Hattiesburg, when they were shot in the parking lot about 1:35 a.m.

Police have arrested Cleothus Wilkerson, 25, and Patricia Loftin Brown, 49, both of Bassfield, and charged them with three counts of accessory after the fact to aggravated assault. The judge in Forrest County Justice Court, George Schmidt, set bond for both suspects at $1.5 million – $500,000 for each charge.

Reportedly, a third suspect, Van Allen Myers, 23, was arrested in Gulfport, and charged with three counts of accessory before the fact of aggravated assault.

Police are searching for a fourth person, Patricia Brown’s son, 29-year old Travis Brown, who is suspected of being the trigger man in the shootings.

Police also believe more suspects may be involved or have knowledge of the shooting. Hattiesburg Police spokesman Sgt. Allen Murray said anyone withholding information relevant to the case could also face accessory charges.

Authorities also said the operating license for the Remington Hunt Club has reportedly been suspended pending the investigation. Police have responded to the club more than 129 times since January.

USM will host Houston on Saturday.
