Bill to stop bullying in schools

Due to a bill authored by Senator J.P. Wilemon, of Belmont, Mississippi schools will be adding a bullying policy to their agendas. WABG said that all school districts are now required to have the bullying policy in place by the end of the school year.

The bill was passed by the 2010 Legislature, and signed into law by Governor Haley Barbour.

The bill defined bullying as “placing a student or school employee in actual or reasonable fear or harm” or creating a “hostile environment by substantially interfering with or impairing a student’s education performance.”

Woman honored as first black firefighter

Laverne Sing was honored last month for being the first black fire fighter and fire captain in the state of Mississippi. Sing was given a proclamation during a recent Greenville City Council meeting led by Mayor Heather Hudson.

She was given a resolution at the state capitol in Jackson for her efforts in April.

Sing said she’s always believed in accomplishing her dreams.

Airport gets security upgrade

Security measures at the Mid Delta Regional Airport are being increased. The upgrades include 28 new interior and exterior cameras, a surveillance system, secure access drive gates and three turnstiles have already been installed to compliment the existing features.

“It helps if there are any issues downstairs or anywhere,” Lane Rodgers, the director of the airport, told WABG. “We’re able to go back and review the tapes and see if something really did happen the way somebody said it happened.”
