School employee guilty of taking student funds

JACKSON – A former secretary for a Holly Springs school has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $4,000 from contributions and funds made to the school, State Auditor Stacey Pickering said. Denise Gleeton has been sentenced to five years probation after Pickering said she failed to deposit the funds into the proper accounts for the Intermediate School in Holly Springs.

“This guilty plea is a result of a joint effort by school officials and agents in our office,” said Pickering. “This account was made up of money from fundraisers and in some cases, individual contributions by parents. These accounts must have the same checks and balances as any other school account to ensure that this money is spent on the appropriate purposes and is in the best interest of the students.”

Pickering said during the school years 2007 to 2009, $4,673.75 of activity funds was collected and receipted by Gleeton but was not deposited into the activity fund’s bank account.

Gleeton is responsible for returning those funds.

Pickerins said Gleeton was hired as a school clerk in Holly Springs in 1995, and served as a secretary to several principals for approximately 15 years.

Gleeton resigned from her position on July 23, 2009.

Pickering said the total exceptions of the funds is $7,735.47, with $4,673.75 representing the funds embezzled by Gleeton, and $724.72 in interest and expenses and $2,337 in investigative costs.
