Pregnant woman among those killed in highway accidents

BOLIVAR COUNTY – Authorities said a Greenville woman, her unborn child, and her 1-year old son were killed Monday morning when the car she was riding in crashed into an embankment just north of Rosedale. Kenyata Cross, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene after Trooper Tony Dunn, of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said the vehicle ran off the road.

Dunn said Cross’ boyfriend, Larry Tuggle, 29, also of Greenville, was driving a 1986 Chevy S-10 pick up truck, traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 1, when he veered off the highway onto the shoulder and struck the dirt embankment. Authorities believe inclimate weather may have been a factor.

“They were crossing a bridge and there was a possibly a patch of ice on the roadway,” Dunn said. “So, they’re looking at the weather conditions as being the cause of the accident. It’s being investigated by our crash team.”

Trooper Dunn said Cross, who was pregnant, had to be extricated from the wreckage. Tuggle was transported to Bolivar County Medical Center by ambulance, and later airlifted to a Memphis trauma center, where Dunn said he was listed in critical condition. Tuggle and Cross’ 1-year old son was airlifted to Labonheur Hospital in Memphis where he later died of his injuries.

Dunn said everyone was reportedly wearing seat belts and the accident remains under investigation.

Kosciusko man killed in single vehicle accident

Troopers also responded to an accident Monday afternoon near Attala County that claimed the life of a 27-year old Kosciusko man. Steven Mitchell was pronounced dead on the Monday, Jan. 4, after officials said he veered off the highway and collided with a tree.

Trooper Tony Dunn said Mitchell was traveling south on U.S. Highway 19 when he ran off the shoulder and a hit a tree. Mitchell, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was driving a 2000 Nissan pick up truck and was about two miles south of Kosciusko.

Authorities were unclear if Mitchell was wearing a seat belt, but Dunn said he had to extricated from the wreckage with the Jaws of Life. Dunn said the accident remains under investigation by the highway patrol crash team.

Kilmichael man killed in crash on New Year’s Day

Another man was killed on New Year’s Day when authorities said his car ran off the road five miles west of Winona. Trooper Tony Dunn said Dion Allen, 32, of Kilmichael, was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 82, in a 1996 Honda Passport, when he drove off the right shoulder near the McCarley junction and overturned.

“When he ran off the highway, he over-corrected and his vehicle flipped several times,” Trooper Dunn said. “And his body was partially ejected from the passenger’s side window when the paramedics arrived.”

Dunn said Allen was not wearing a seat belt and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

This accident also remains under investigation.
